Daniel and Angie Kim, owners of Interstellar wanted to create a space that embraced the “space between the stars”. As a Korean American couple with a unique mix of cultural and culinary experiences, Daniel and Angie Kim wanted to channel this philosophical space into a physical space and chose a charming single story brick building just two doors down from the Santa Monica Pier.

Base Collaborative worked with Omgivning Architects and Interior Designers to create furniture pieces for the space that played with cafe’s astrological theme and coastal vibe.

The furniture pieces are flexible to accommodate the various menu items and meals. The wall mounted tables are ideal for a quick coffee while the terrazzo top dining tables can be reconfigured for large parties or a table for two. Playful iridescent pedestals sit on the table tops to highlight your favorite your pastry and interact with the mirrored surfaces around the space. A tiered shelving unit with tinted green-blue glass below the menu board provides a place for Interstellar’s merchandise.

We designed this conference table with Omgivning for the Historic One Bunker Hill Building in Downtown Los Angeles. The geometric brass inlay is inspired by the building's Art Deco style. 

We used some of our favorite cement tiles and blackened steel to design patio tables for Don Francisco's Casa Cubana in the Historic Spring Arcade. Inside the restaurant we collaborated with Omgivning and the Gavina family to come up with an entry display shelf that houses merchandise and vintage artifacts. Custom menu boards integrate the use of beechwood and brass for a design that easy to update as seasonal menus are printed.
